What makes an honest mortgage broker? 

First I would talk to others who have used the particular mortgage broker you are thinking of using. Asking them what their experience was like and if they got the best deal.

Is the mortgage broker used to dealing with specific situations?

The mortgage broker should be letting you know what your costs are going to be up front, not telling you later that you owe money for this or that.

If you feel you are being pressured by the broker, watch out.

A good mortgage broker will also have extensive connections in the industry.
